Topic: In many countries, more and more people choose to buy imported food rather than food produced locally. Why people buy imported food? What could be done to encourage people to buy local food? (Vietnam IELTS Test - 29/10/2016)
It is now a trend that people increasingly import food instead of indigenous purchases. While there are many reasons leading to this preference, the solution can also be tackled to improve the situation.
People prefer imported food to local food because they are not available in their own countries or even fresher and more nutritious. Firstly, some food remains as specialties in specific regions. For instance, while cereal grows on frigid zone's land, rice is only found in the tropical countries, which results in food import for truly authentic flavors and quality. Secondly, the majority of people hold the notion that foreign food is fresher and more nutritious. Developed countries are regarded as meritious food exporters because of their high technical agribusiness, genetically modified food, strict food safety and quality management.
High food import is not a controversy but still a barrier to the development of national food industry, which requires more measures from both government and local business. First and foremost, indigenous food quality should be improved in order to increase its competitiveness against imported one. This could be fulfilled by applying biotechnology and mechanization in production, as well as a careful and thorough process of food safety assurance and control. Moreover, national governors had better impose higher taxes and quotas on foreign food import, at the same time offer more subsidies and promotions to local food.
In conclusion, people can choose whether to buy food locally or import it; however, they prefer the latter choice. As understanding various underlying causes, government and local business should propose different solutions to motivate national food security and business.
