Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

In this day and age, urbanization and population booming have put an enormous pressure on the transport infrastructure in many metropolises around the world. Some argue that governments allocating money for the construction and upgradation of railways instead of roads would be a viable method; however, i opt for the opposite opinion.

First of all, due to the fact that the sharp increase in the number of urban residents has led to more and more houses springing up, which has made the area for transport systems reduced in size. Therefore, it is unanimously agreed that using vehicles on the streets is a more practical and affordable approach to any locations in the city center than being a commuter in trains. Vietnam perfectly exemplifies this situation. According to the General Statistics Office, the number of passengers traveling by trains declines annually across the country; especially, those only go to another city on some occasions rather than participate in the railway system regularly, which also means rails does not contribute much to dispersing the traffic flow. Moreover, disbursements on railway system are extremely large, including payments for the workforce and the maintenance of specialized mechanics. In general, investment in railways would be fruitless.

In lieu of splurging on rails, it is highly recommended that governments expand the fiscal expenditure on extending roads and erecting new facilities such as overpasses, bridges to improve stop-and-go traffic at peak time. Another favourable method could be restoring public transport system to replace personal means of transport, which would definitely lower greenhouse gas emissions and be environmentally friendly.

All in all, in effect, spending on roads is a better way to tackle traffic problems in big cities than that of rail lines in the long run.
