Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Many people believe that it is significant for students to choose their major which they like in tertiary education, while others think that studying subjects such as science and technology, which are more practical, would be beneficial in the future. To my way of thinking, every student has the right to decide their higher education.
Forcing students to study certain subjects is advantageous to some extent. First, after graduating, students who major in some key subjects may have more job opportunities, higher salary or promotion chances. For instance, as it is a fact that young job seekers with art degrees would have more difficulties in finding a job than those who have economic qualifications. Moreover, if the government only allow university students to study particular subjects such as technology and economy, there would be more inventions and economic development, resulting in country’s prosperity.
On the other hand, it seems to me that university students should be free to choose their preferred area of study. The major reason is that is not clear or predictable which subjects will be useful. To illustrate, some futurologists in Europe believe and predict that history and philosophy may be extremely necessary for the future when technology becomes full-developed. In addition, society will benefit more if our students are passionate about what they are learning. Passion could raise the level of satisfaction in life and productiveness in working.
In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for universities to focus only on the most useful subjects, I personally prefer the current system in which people have the right to study whatever they like.
