We were asked to write an academic comparison/contrast essay for our writing course. I hope you will correct our essay and give comments. Thank you in advance.

Topic: The differences in the living style of young people between living at home and living far away from home.

According to Wikipedia, a home is where a person, a group, or a family can live permanently or semi-permanently. In reality, people will have to leave their homes at some time in their lives, particularly young people who will attend university or get employment. Others, on the other hand, live with their families. Although these two styles of living have something in common when it comes to performing domestic chores, they have a lot of distinctions in terms of freedom, decision-making responsibility, and financial aspects.

The first and most apparent difference is freedom. When living at home, young people tend to be constrained by their parents. They have to follow their parents’ rules, such as going to bed before 10 pm or not going to nightclubs. In addition, when someone makes a mistake, they are immediately corrected, even punished, not to do it again. On the contrary, when young people live far away from home, freedom is in their hands. With more free time, they can take care of themselves and broaden their relationships. However, they are still supposed to know for themselves what is right and wrong in their lives.

Another difference involves responsibility for making decisions. When young people are with their parents, they will be aided in making minor to significant decisions. Their parents decide almost everything for them, such as their education paths and even their career paths. On the contrary, when they live away from home, parents do not stand by them, so they have to decide all those things on their own. According to Harris (2010), forgetting and waiting are both painful experiences, but at times the most agonizing is coming to a decision. Making decisions is tough; therefore, young people need to acquaint themselves with it when they live away from home.

The financial aspect is also a significant difference between the two lifestyles mentioned. Young people living with their families will not worry much about shared income and expenses because their parents care for them. They tend to spend the money they have on other things like investing in personal development and relationships. In contrast, living away from home requires tighter financial control. Most young people will have to think about money for basic needs such as rent, electricity and water bills, and service fees. If they do not know how to manage their money wisely, they will fall into a pile of debt. Young people who choose this lifestyle often encounter more difficulties but in return have better financial independence.

In conclusion, even though people who live at home and live far away have to do housework, there are many differences between the two mentioned styles. Inevitably, students who leave their houses and live alone have to face some changes in freedom, making decisions, and financial aspects. Living at home or away from home has its own benefits. The vital thing is that we should learn how to adapt to life’s changes.
