Please help me correct this

Andy came out of the bathroom and walked to/toward his office when a ding stopped him in his tracks. He looked to/toward the elevator. Its doors opened and Mary got out.


Please help me correct this.

Is the phrase "stopped him in his tracks" appropriate here?
