In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
In recent years, there is a considerable number of individuals opting for living on their own compared to the past. From my perspective, this phenomenon will have both positive and negative effects in equal measure.
On the one hand, living alone has brought a wide range of merits to citizens. First and foremost, it enables them to avoid family conflicts and arguments due to the generation gap. For instance, in Asian countries, family clashes which stem from disagreements about the age to marry accidentally create the pressure on youngster who is considered to need focus on their career with a hectic workload in the competitive world. Secondly, urban dwellers may become more independent and self-reliant than those who lodge with family. In other words, they tend to make more efforts to learn how to cope with the daily basic needs such as cooking, paying the bills, or managing their budget. Hence, they get more valuable life skills and be mature.
On the other hand, there also have been many disadvantages not only on individuals but also on the society. On a personal level, citizens could be lack of sharing or encouragement when they lodge without family members or roommates. This might lead to several mental problems, even depression because of dealing with any life issues by themselves, especially in the modern workplace full of intense competition. For example, Japan has been experienced an increasing rate of committing suicide among young people and labour forces triggered by the burden of daily expenses or overwork in several years, particularly in the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, from the society level, if the number of residents living alone is increasing continuously, this will create a burden on the natural environment due to insufficiency of accommodation. And the consequences would be to expand the residential areas and threaten the wild animal habitats.
In conclusion, the rise in the number of residents living alone will have both beneficial and detrimental impacts on both individual and social aspects.
