The only way to improve the safety in our roads is to give much stricter punishment for driving offences. Do you agree or disagree?

It is certainly true that in the battle against traffic accidents much stricter punishment for driving offences is highly desirable. But I can not fully agree with the claim that it is the only way to reduce accidents. Education, traffic sign, road design also have a positive part to play in combating traffic accidents.

The stricter punishment is an effective way to reduce traffic accident. In China, if drivers do not follow traffic ruled and regulations, their score will be reduced. Every driver has 12 scores. If they lose 12 scores in one year, they must have a traffic test again. According to the recent survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Science, the punishment improves the traffic safety effectively.

Moreover, education is an indispensable way to improve traffic safety. For example, when some traffic rules and regulations alter, driver should be informed. By learning, they can avoid driving offences. Not only drivers but also walking men should study traffic rules and regulations. Sometimes I can see some walking man offend the regulation. For another instance, one time when I drove in highway, I found a man walk around the roads.

In addition, road design and the place of traffic sign have a great influence on the road safety. Some places often give rise of traffic accident, as a result of the vision of drivers is not clear at these places. Owing to this phenomenon, traffic sign should inform drivers before arriving.

Therefore, for above reasons, I welcome much stricter punishment, but it is not sufficient. Other measures such as education, road design, the arrangement of traffic sign should be taken. By the essential steps, road can become increasingly safer.
