Topic: People should follow the customs and traditions when people start to live in a new country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Answer:
Many people argue that foreigners should adapt the norms and habits of the local when they come to reside in a strange country. I completely agree with this opinion.
On the one hand, there are some disadvantages that expats could encounter when they do not conform to the traditions in new country. Firstly, newcomers could find it very difficult to blend into the new life. In fact, every country is different with the rest of the world relating to many aspects like history, culture, people and cuisine. Therefore, foreigners could miss a lot of chances to broaden their horizons, open their mind, experience new things as well as become isolated if they do not try to follow the new customs. Secondly, it is very easy for current immigrants to fall foul of the law if they do not study thoroughly about habits and viewpoints of the citizens in the host country. In Singapore, for example, the local could consider foreigners as ill-mannered or dirty if they litter the street or spit gum in public places.
On the other hand, I believe that everyone could gain a lot of benefits if they integrate well in new community. On advantage is that they could make friends easily with the residents. Obviously, when people have many friends in a strange country, they will have chances to explore many aspects of that country such as tourism and cuisine due to their friends’ help. Another reason is that when someone would like to settle and run a business in the host country, they have to study many things relating to their target market. Therefore, adopting new traditions and norms in their host environment enables foreign entrepreneurs to understand how to make their business suitable for their target customers. A good case in this point is Marou which is a chocolate brand produced in Vietnam but has gained a lot of achievements by their customer understanding.
In conclusion, I strongly recommend that everyone should conform to culture and customs when they move to live in a new country due to benefits that I have mentioned above.
