Essay & Composition Writing

Please, help me correct my essay. Did I use the right tense, or was I meant to use the present tense?

The tables give the proportion of students in the UK, France, and Germany who engage in five different extracurricular activities.

Overall, whereas in the UK and Germany, the commonest activity is sport, in France, it is art. Language classes, by contrast, were the least preferred in the UK and Germany.

In the UK, 42% of primary school students, 48% of high schoolers, and 32% of those in university do sports as an extracurricular activity, compared with 11% of primary school students, 3% of high schoolers, and 15% of university students who are all in language class. Furthermore, debating was essentially the second most popular activity, although its popularity was much lower than that of sports. The trend in Germany is strikingly similar, with the percentage of students in primary school, high school, and university who do sports being 49%, 46%, and 39% respectively. In Germany, moreover, music is the second most popular activity, followed by art; however, the proportion of university students in art classes, at 23%, is only slightly lower than that in music classes, at 24%.

France is, in a way, the outlier. Among all groups of students, art is the most popular, while debating is the least popular; just 2%, 5%, and 2% of students in primary school, high school, and university, respectively, attend debating classes.

Where did you find this practice test? It is far too complicated - there are 5 activities, 3 countries and 3 education levels. You have to carefully compare, group, and analyze 45 different values, which is not really possible in the time allowed to write the essay.
