When a new town is planned, it is more important to develop public parks and sports facilities than a shopping center for people to spend their free time in. To what extent do agree or disagree?
It has been a controversy whether the town planners should construct public parks and sports facilities or business districts and shopping malls. When considering comprehensive benefits to public health and local economic development, I strongly believe that shopping centers are as crucial as parks in the city.
There are several reasons why sports facilities play vital roles for city inhabitants. To begin with, the sports infrastructure is suitable to improve the whole community‘s health, thus the governing body can reduce the budget for medical costs and the welfare state. Building public parks means encouraging urban dwellers for all ages to take exercises regularly, and keep in good shape. For instance, the elderly can practice Tai chi, go jogging, and young adults opt to play badminton, tennis that can avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Moreover, communing with nature and enjoying the fresh air is one of the optimum leisure activities to not only relieve stress and also have a positive impact on mental health.
On the other hand, we can deny the advantages that shopping centers bring. Firstly, malls can create job opportunities for residents. By doing this, the employees can earn a living to support their families and decrease the rate of crime. It is undeniable these malls are known as tourist destinations for travelers. The visitors can become an economic powerhouse which positive for economic growth through purchasing products and services. A bright example is those shopping malls in London and Milan that absorb millions of dollars from tourists every year.
In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I adopt a balanced viewpoint that both public infrastructure and shopping centers have the same role in the health and economy of the masses.
