It can be said that homosexuality or the love between people who in the same-sex is always a controversial topic in the world. Although homosexuality is quite popular, many people do not accept it. On the other hand, homosexuality is considered as ordinary, acceptable or preferable in many other cultures (Strong, Devault, & Sayad, 1996). Over many years, there are a large number of research was carried out to find out the attitude of society toward same-sex relationships. More over, many scientists also uncover the community’s viewpoints toward homosexual parents or families with same-sex parents.

Firstly, homosexuality is viewed as normal and acceptable in many society (Strong et al., 1996). In ancient Greek, homosexuality was accepted as naturally as heterosexuality is acceptable in America today. The Greeks believed that same-gender relationships between males express the highest form of love (Strong et al., 1996). Then in 1965, Pomeroy showed that more than half of 225 Native American tribes view males in same-sex relationships as acceptable (as cited in Crook & Baur, 1999). Homosexuality is not only accepted in real life, but it also has become more visible and has been shown positively in the 1900s media, written by Isherwood (1997) (as cited in Crook & Baur, 1999). There are more and more movies about homosexuality such as: “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”- a story about a real-life gay murder in Georgia. (Guthmann,1997, as cited in Crook & Baur, 1999) or a movie based on a realistic story about two teenage girls next door falling in love with each other named “The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love”. Especially, Gideonse (1998) pointed that topics appearing frequently on television talk shows and news programs are issues around same-sex relationships (as cited in Crook & Baur, 1999). Moreover, homosexual marriage is also legalized in most of Europe and many other countries (S.Kimmel & Messner, 1998). In 1989, Denmark is the first country all over the world to make gay marriage legalized (Ferguson, 1998).

Otherwise, many people have a prejudice against same-sex relationships. Having looked back the past, throughout Western history, homosexual people have been put to the torture and killed, or sentenced to death by drowning and burning in American colonies (Crook & Baur, 1999).Then in the early- to mid- 1900s, the social attitudes toward homosexuality were changed. Instead of thinking that homosexual people were sinner, it was believed that they were “sick”, written by Esterberg in 1990 (as cited in Crook & Baur, 1999). Similarly, in 1997, studies showed that most of American people want to “cure” homosexuality (Richardson, Taylor, & Whittier, 1997). The prejudice toward same-gender relationships was showed again in a public poll, which was conducted for Time and CNN showed that 52 percent of respondents think that others may accept homosexuality but not themselves, whereas 39 percent revealed that same-gender relationships were absolutely unacceptable (Kelly, 1998). Not only is homosexuality not accepted, but also homosexual people have to suffer the name calling, violence and ridicule (Schwartz & Scott, 1994). For example, O’Conor (1994) and Marino (1995) indicated that harassment, misunderstanding and discrimination are the problems that homosexual students repeatedly put up with (as cited in Kelly, 1998). In 1993, Cage also pointed that there is an increasing in antigay violence on college campuses and elsewhere (as cited in Kelly, 1998). It was reported by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (1988) that over 2000 cases of assault, arson, rape and murder in which the victims are gays and lesbians happened in 1985, this statistic reached 5000 in 1986 (Turner & Rubinson, 1993).

In spite of the prejudice toward homosexuality, same-sex couples still want to have a completed family with children. Although research showed that lesbian are fine mothers, many people strongly oppose to lesbian’s child custody because they afraid that homosexual parent will have an impact on children’s sexual identity (Shaw & Lee, 2004). However, Patterson affirmed that sexual identities of children raised by lesbian mothers develop in much the same ways as those of children of heterosexual parents (as cited in Association., 2005). Similarly, in 1995, Bailey supported that more than 90 percent of 55 gay or bisexual men were heterosexual (as cited in Lauer & Lauer, 1997).

In conclusion, a great number of studies were done about the attitude of society toward homosexuality. Homosexual people are still fighting for their rights and the acceptance of society. The attitude toward same-gender relationship changed through ages, from the past to present. Therefore, this paper will focus on the attitude of students of English Department in Hà N?i University toward homosexuality.
