Topic: some people think that in order to improve the quality of education, students should be encouraged to evaluate and criticise their teacher. Others feel that this will lead to loss of respect and discipline in the classroom. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

It is argued by some that teacher appraisal should be encouraged to enhance the quality of education. Others, however, insist that such evaluation could lead to poor discipline in classroom. Both these view have their reasons.

On the one hand, there are certain drawbacks of school assessment. First of all, students, if allowed to give evaluation on teachers, might believe that even excessive criticism or offence would receive no punishment, which cause loss of respect and discipline and the difficulty in class management. This can also be inferred that learners’ assessment is not always impartial and reliable, since many of them do not hesitate to write negative feedbacks about the teacher who makes strict punishment on their mistakes. Meanwhile, in order to gain a better evaluation, teachers would seek to please their students by lowering requirements and avoiding giving detailed comments on bad academic performance. The teaching quality is, as a result, adversely affected rather than improved in the long run.

On the other hand, advocates of teacher appraisal believe that both students and teachers could reap a myriad of benefits from such evaluation. Only by being student-centred and making efforts to meet their demand can education be successful, and teachers’ performance assessment has a role to play in this. The involvement in constructive suggestions enables teachers to understand the problem in their methods and make suitable adjustment accordingly so that learners’ expectation could be fulfilled. Similarly importantly, giving judgement encouraged students to think independently, thus enhancing their critical and analytical abilities. For instance, at the end of each semester, my school’s administrators often ask students to do survey and write feedbacks on teaching quality. This has required us to analyze and summarize our own opinions, which stands students’ skills in good stead.

All things considered, there are both arguments for and against teacher evaluation. In my opinion, it should be applied to school yet only taken as a source of reference in total judgement of each teacher.
