Is freedom of speech necessary in a free society?

There has been lengthy debate about the significance of right of speech in a free society. Some people object to have freedom of unlimited expression, the others assert that this right is absolutely essential in a liberal nation. In my opinion, the free speech is the basic human right but there may have some limits in definite conditions.

A section of population argue that it is illegal to provoke hatred even in most democratic countries. We have to acknowledge that racial or religious discrimination has frequently occurred in societies where their citizens have spoke their minds freely. It could cause political instability and lack of social unity among communities across the countries.

However, the freedom of speech is the fundamental right in developed nations and the government only restricts it to a certain level in extreme circumstances regulated specifically by law. I will outline two main reasons to justify the free speech. First, the group of high-level leaders could hear people’s voices across the country, even in the most rural areas. The government’s new policies would fulfill people’s benefit. The free speech is also an effective way to observe operations of public organizations. Criminal behaviors relating to officials would be detected and investigated. Second, the free speech has played an crucial role in the development of human beings. There have been a plenty of evidence of people who silenced for innovative ideas that are now accepted as true. Galileo is a clear proof of that. He once declared that the earth revolves around the sun but was sentenced for his voice.

In conclusion, both views about the freedom of speech are right to an extent. It is a basically liberal right of every citizen in the nation and only limited in certain conditions.
