Topic: People should follow customs and traditions when people start to live in a new country. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

ANSWER:

It is argued that if someone resides in a foreign country, they need to adapt to local customs and traditions. I completely agree with this opinion.

Unless newcomers conform to the norms of social behavior, they will face many difficulties when settling in the host country. Firstly, it is bound to be hard for newcomers to make friends because they do not follow the lifestyle in a foreign country. For example, contrary to Vietnamese people, those who come from Eastern countries tend to communicate less with strange people in public places. Therefore, that some Vietnamese would like to get into a conversation with them makes them feel extremely weird and annoyed. Hence, to have more friends when living overseas, newcomers need to learn and follow the local customs and traditions. Secondly, recent immigrants might fall foul of the law if they do not respect the behavior and customs of locals. In Singapore, for instance, littering or spit gum on the street is considered as a kind of crime and those who engage in this kind of criminal activity have to pay a fine or go to prison.

On the other hand, there are also many benefits for foreigners when they adopt the lifestyle of their new country. One advantage is that local people will become more welcoming if they feel that newcomers are showing respect for the local way of life. The establishment of closer links with the host community might lead to greater integration as well as understanding mutually. Another benefit is the richness of experiences that newcomers can gain from enjoying aspects of local customs and traditions, enabling them to participate in community life and avoid social isolation. During festivals or national holidays, they will feel like they really “belong” to their new country.

In conclusion, I believe that foreigners residing in host country need to conform to local habits and traditions to make sure that they can fully integrate into a new culture.
