Task 2: People think that government should increase the cost of fuel for cars and other vehicles to solve environmental problems. Give your opinion.
Many hold a belief that it is crucial for authorities to raise petrol prices in order to prevent environmental issues. In my opinion, although this proposal could be a useful solution, other measures might be more effective. In the following essay, justifications for my point of view will be discussed.
On the one hand, it is noteworthy that rising price of petrol could be a necessary step in dealing with environmental problems for several reasons. Firstly, the number of private vehicles on road transport will be restricted. Therefore, it will gradually reduce the frequency of traffic congestion which is the main culprit of air pollution as a great amount of CO2 emission is released by vehicles. Secondly, the taxes raised by this policy could be used to improve public transportation as well as infrastructure. In the future, there will be a tendency for people to use public transports which usually consume less fossil fuel.
On the other hand, although there are some positive outcomes of increasing fuel prices, alternative measures might bring out more benefits in the long-term. To illustrate, with the mushrooming of technological developments, many countries in Europe are now applying car-sharing method to significantly limit car users on roads. Another approach which is extremely popular is that if car owners drive in the rush hours, they must pay an extra fee for traffic jams. From these examples, one can conclude that rising petrol price is not the only way to improve the quality of the environment.
In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, it is my opinion that although environmental problems could be reduced by petrol charging policy, other possible steps should be taken into account as sustainable solutions for our ecosystem.
