Essay & Composition Writing

Please help me check my essay. Thank you so much!

Some people think that excessive use of smartphones badly affects teenagers’ literacy skills.

To what extent do you agree/disagree?

My essay:

It is said that the increasing reliance on mobile devices can have a negative influence on a teen's ability to read and write. Personally, I only partly agree with this statement.

On the one hand, young students can reap great benefits from harnessing the power of mobile technologies. First, easy access to the Internet provided by smartphones allows students to download thousands e-books and online materials for free. By learning from these resources, one can broaden their knowledge on various topics including astronomy and world history, which are normally outside of the school curriculum. Second, teachers can install multiple educational apps on their devices to engage students in learning activities. For example, Quiz-let offers digital flashcards and fun games that can help language learners boost their vocabulary much more effectively than taking the traditional rote-learning method. Hence, it is undeniable that mobile phones can actually facilitate learning in the classroom.

Despite the positives, using cellphones uncontrollably could do harm to the young minds. Granted, teenagers are heavy users of social networking sites, being exposed to a myriad of online posts on a regular basis. Excessive consumption of inappropriate content on Facebook and Instagram could result in young people holding biased opinions of the world around them. What is even more worrying is that there has been a major increase in the use of ambiguous language among teens, which is more than likely to severely affect their ability to think logically as they grow up.

In conclusion, although I believe that making good use of mobile phones could enhance students' literacy, I am concerned that such an approach may have certain drawbacks.
