Many people go through life doing work that they hate or have no talent for.

Why does this happen? What are the consequences of this situation?

Talent for and love for a job are clearly important factors that one should consider before choosing a job. However, many people ignore these two factors. In this essay, I will explain that this happens because of people's desire to make a lot of money and why this leads to decreased productivity in the workplace and unhappiness.

Many people have realised that they may not be able to make much money doing the work they like or the one they are good at, leading to them doing work which they have no talent for nor interest in, but will guarantee them a high income. We, as humans, have a tendency to make being wealthy our priority, so this is not surprising. A lot of South Africans, for example, are not only passionate about mathematics, but also very good in that area, yet they do not intend to work as mathematicians or work in any mathematics related field, since people doing those jobs are often underpaid. Instead, they plan to work as surgeons or engineers despite having no interest and not being naturally good in those areas because those jobs are high paying.

This situation, however harmless it may seem, has negative effects. The most notable is low productivity in the work-place. This is because people who hate their work do not usually put much effort into it, which may lead to the work not being done properly. If a doctor dislikes his job, for instance, they may not spend the required time treating their patients, thereby decreasing their patients' chances of becoming well. Another negative consequence is people may become unhappy as they are not doing jobs they like. To illustrate, my became depressed when he was 50 years old partly because he grew tired of working as a banker, a job which he never liked.

In conclusion, people do work they dislike or have no talent for because they can make much money from doing them. A decline in workplace productivity and rise in unhappiness are effects of this situation.
