Topic: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programs (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children).

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many people put forward the idea that high school students should be given the added responsibility of doing unpaid work for the sake of their community. In my opinion, although volunteering is indeed an altruistic activity, it is completely wrong to force youngsters to fulfil such a commitment.

On the one hand, I understand that there could be a lot of benefits to reap from working on a volunteer basis. Students can gain valuable experiences by working for charities and non-profit organizations in their communities. Volunteer jobs include helping the elderly, teaching kindergarten kids and conducting neighborhood clean-ups can help the young build their confidence and sympathy. Furthermore, frequent interactions with the locals will allow students to enhance their communication and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for later work and college application.

Despite the positives, there are certain drawbacks of doing volunteer work that are worth taking into consideration. Firstly, such a duty can put young people under immense pressure. To be more specific, conflicting demands on time may occur due to the fact that students must schedule in labor work while trying to deal with homework and school assignments. Spending more time on community service also means that students have fewer opportunities to take on leisure activities after school hours. Over time, they may develop mental health issues such as higher stress levels and anxiety, thus damaging their well-being in the long run.

In conclusion, it might seem rational at first to make unpaid community service compulsory, I, however, do not support the view that students should be obliged to do such work.
