Some people claim that there are more disadvantages of the car than its advantages. Do you agree or disagree?

The invention of car has brought both benefits and drawbacks to life. While some people argue it causes some severe problems, I strongly believe that car has become an article of dress and its advantages far outstrip disadvantages.

On the one hand, the drawbacks of the car are only a few. The rise in pollution from engine exhaust and traffic congestion are the natural sequel to burgeoning population of cars. Furthermore, over-dependence on this vehicle may lead to inactive state of people these days. In other words, people with high frequency of using car may fail to do practices such as walking and cycling, which has resulted in some common illnesses, even obesity.

On the other hand, positive effects of car on people and economy are more significant. The most obvious advantage is that car enables users to have freedom of movement and allows them to enjoy the ease of transportation. People are no longer forced to wait in line for buses, trains, or stuck in crowded public transport. Furthermore, travelling from destination to destination is in the blink of an eye. Therefore, time and distance is not a barrier anymore. More importantly, families find it easier to go out together in a car as it gives a sense of privacy and coziness. Especially, for the elderly, disabled and sick members, car is an optimum choice for their sake.

Furthermore, automobile industry offers jobs to millions of workers. Filling stations, restaurants and other businesses which serve automobile travellers are of major importance to a country’s economy. In fact, some developing nations have put enormous effort in making automobiles to boost the economy and automobile manufacturing industries, to some extent, has made a great contribution to countries’ budget.

In conclusion, the benefits to people’s lives and the economic impact created by car probably outweigh the disadvantages. Yet, we must know how to balance the frequency of using car on a daily basis so that we can minimize the demerits in the near future.
