Some people say history is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that, in today's world, subjects like science and technology are more important than history.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some people support that studying history is necessary for school while some other people believe that science and technology play a higher role than history in this modern life. I completely agree that students should not downplay the importance of history and also think that learning science-based subjects is more crucial than history today.

Knowledge gained from history offers various benefits for students. It helps them to understand the older generations and apply many experiences from the past to solve similar situations at the current time. It combines a wide variety of topics to enrich our knowledge. For example, through reading history books, young people can acquire information from politics to culture, such as understanding part of the reasons why there are always wars and conflicts in the Middle East. Or they can explain why Korean sometimes ran campaigns to boycott Japanese products whenever some significant events triggered their memory of Japan's occupation of the Korean peninsula.

However, many urgent global issues in the modern world that cause serious consequences need to be solved by science and technology, so studying them has a more critical role than history. Taking air pollution as an example, scientists proved that aerosols come from car exhaust, power plants, factories, and wildfires are some primary sources of that global challenge. Even though we acknowledge that aerosols have to be reduced, we cannot rigidly replace cars and trains with stagecoaches as in the past, nor stop the Amazon rainforest wildfires through any lessons from history because it never happened in our grandparents’ generations. One of the reasons many old-time experiences have become obsolete is the enormous difference in population between the current and the past. Horses and carriages will not satisfy the increasing rates of usage and the speed we demand today. Instead of going back to old school ways of living, we have hope to expect that the advance of technology will soon make all cars run without producing any air pollutants.

In conclusion, while I appreciate the importance of history in schools, I still think without reservation that studying science and technology has a higher role in tackling our global issues.
