In the coastal areas, stomach cancer accounted for the highest percentage (20.1%) while in rural and urban areas, lung cancer constituted the largest proportion (18.9% and 17.0% respectively). In mountainous areas, liver cancer overtook lung cancer to register the highest figure out of all categories surveyed (18.9%). The underlying causes for this was not clear. Different geographic and socio-economic condition could be underlying cause for variation between these areas.

Demographic characteristics of the study subjects included sex ratio of 1.2:1, with the age range of 91 years (7-98) and median age of 58 years. Similarly, Dhungana in a study from Nepal reported that out of total 198 cancer cases, the sex ratio was 1.0:1. The youngest and oldest ages were 19 and 81 years respectively; median age was 55 years. So cancer was more commonly seen in advanced age group though the types of cancer varied with age and sex. These results were correlated with many cancer statistics worldwide.

In our study, 86.0% of cases had some microscopic confirmation of the diagnosis, either histology or cytology. The figure of this category in this research was higher than that of Dieu’s study and lower than those of studies of Tung and Binu. This was because of the high frequency of liver cancer in our study and the majority of our liver cancer patients were diagnosed by CT scan/MRI and the AFP blood test.

Our results showed that cancer staging was performed in 1128 patients. Among them, 648 had the stage III and IV (57.4%); the late-stage lung cancer patients accounted for the highest percentage (86.8%), followed by liver cancer (68.2%). These results were similar to the study of Thuan with the percentages of cases presented with advanced-stage of liver cancer and lung cancer were 87.8% and 84.3% respectively. Liver and lung cancer was two types of cancer with the poor prognosis, most patients were diagnosed in later stages. Early detection of these cancer can greatly increase the chances for successful treatment and it is essential to strengthen cancer screening programs. At the lowest position were cancer of bone and articular cartilage, mesothelial and soft tissue, at 0.2% each.
