Cancer staging was performed in 1128 patients (56.2%). Among them, more than 50% of diagnosed cases presented in a late stage of their disease (stage III and IV). Lung cancer took the top position with regard to late-stage at 86.8%, followed by liver cancer at 68.2%. In terms of early-stage (= stage II), cervix cancer topped the table at 82.6%, followed by thyroid cancer 79.4% and breast cancer 74.8%.
These results were similar to the study of Thuan with the percentages of cases presented with advanced-stage of liver cancer and lung cancer were 87.8% and 84.3% respectively. Liver and lung cancer was two types of cancer with the poor prognosis, most patients were diagnosed in the later stages. Early detection of these cancer can greatly increase the chances for successful treatment and it is essential to strengthen cancer screening programs. In this study: The majority of breast, cervical and thyroid cancer patients were found to have early-stage cancer. According to Dieu’s study, approximately haft of breast and thyroid cancer patients were found to have stage I and II. In this research study, a high percentage of breast and cervical cancer patients came to the hospital at an early stage of their diseases. Screening for early detection of these types of cancer is one of the focus activities of national cancer control programmes. This study’s results hint that the first step was effective. However, because the network of cancer prevention and the funding have been still limited, the rate of breast and cervical cancer cases detected at an early stage was higher than for other types of cancer but still quite modest. Therefore, health education and screening activities for early detection of these types of cancer need more attention.
