00Community service is a very important aspect of life because it through serving others that we learn very important lessons and skills that we can use in our daily live and in the career world. Volunteering at MDanderson Cancer center dermatology lab, mentoring at-risk children at McGregor elementary and organizing a garage sale to raise money for the march of dimes are the community service projects that have developed my leadership skills and also prepared me to pursue a career in nursing. 02br

00KIDS HOPE USA is a church based model that recruits volunteer mentors to mentor at-risk children on e hour every week. This creates a better environment for kids to learn and grow by feeling that they are valued and loved.00 00I became a friend to John who at third grade was not able to read and write00 00like other kids in his class. I became his mentor helping him develop his reading and mathematics skill. For forty minutes we would do fun games and read stories together.. and for last twenty minutes we would play his favorite game of basketball that way we can be able to bond as friends. I believe having Compassion, patience good communication, understanding and respect00 00are the necessary quality/philosophies that a nurse should have. I was able to learn and improve this skills while working with John. I understood where he came from00 00and through a lot of patience and learning a proper way of communicating whith00 00him being behind his class was an awesome experience. 02br

00Organizing a garage sale to00 00support the march of dimes was another community service…..As part of the psychology fair00 00whose purpose was educate people about the problems facing the country.. .i was able to collect $25000 00which was given to the march of dime organization which helps research and educate families and moms about premature babies. It took hard work for me to be able to organize the garage sale however knowing that it was all for the good cause.. made all the thought of hard work disappear. Education is a very important part of the philosophy on nursing. Because everyday we come in contact with patients who need to be educated on the disease and the challenges that they bring.. to be able to let them know on how to take care of themselves after they are out of the hospital which is necessary for a better recovery. I learned that if we educate clients about what they have , then it can save lives and bring hope for the brighter future. 02br

00Nursing is not only about taking care of patients, it extends to the research world too. I had an opportunity to volunteer at MDanderson cancer center in the dermatology lab which delt with patiens with Alopecia Areata. People with this disease begin to loose all there hair for not particular reason and they become bold. My task were to help gather all the information needed to perform a genetic linkage analysis which we then entered into the national alopecia areata registry which will help researchers find a cure for the disease. 02br
