please help!: Equality in distribution of a phrase??

Not sure what subject this goes in, but here's the sentence:

The many years of war in England have left thousands of people dead, hundreds of thousands without homes and many more had to leave the country.

Bear with me here, this is a fictional sentence, but how would it be corrected? With a comma? Should I delete the "had"? And what part of English grammar is this in?

Thanks!
