Types of Horror Movies

The different types of horror movies are growing year after year. They each represent a different way to play tricks on our emotions and minds. Once you know the aspects of each type then they are easy to identify. Horror movies represent our greatest fears, yet we still find reasons to watch them.

"Slasher" is a horror genre that typically involves a killer stalking and planning on killing the victim in a violent manner. The final girl will either die trying to avenge her friends or kill the killer in her attempt. Examples for slasher films are; Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An actor that is most renowned for slasher films is Robert Englund who plays as Fred Kruegar in Nightmare on Elm Street. Special effects in slasher movies are mostly fake blood from the victims and masks for the killers to wear. My favorite movie out of the examples is Nightmare on Elm Street because Fred Kruegar attacks his victims in their dreams.

"Romance" is a horror genre that involves vampires, werewolves, and killers who are acting on love or desire. Furthermore, death rarely occurs in this genre because of acting on love or desire. Examples for romance films are; Twilight, Sweeny Todd: The Barber Demon of Fleet Street, and Phantom of the Opera. An actor that is associated with romance horror is Johnny Depp who plays Sweeny Todd in Sweeny Todd: The Barber Demon of Fleet Street .The special effects in romance would mostly be fake blood and makeup for the vampires, werewolves, and killers. My favorite movie out of the examples would be Twilight because it represents uncontrollable love.

"Psychological" is a horror genre that feeds off human fears, guilt, and beliefs. It doesn't reveal the nature of the killer until the end of the movie. Examples of psychological films are; Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, and Uninvited. An actor that is most known for the psychological genre is Anthony Hopkins who plays Hannibal Lectar in Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon. There aren't many special effects within psychological films because they are meant to seem real as possible. My favorite movie out of the examples is Silence of the Lambs because it shows how Hannibal and Clarice work together to catch a killer.

"Religious/Demonic" is a horror genre that relates to Satan, demons, prophesies, and the Anti-Christ. Examples of religious/demonic films are; The Exorcist, The Unborn, and The Omen. An actor that is most recognized is Linda Blair who plays Regan (a possessed girl) in The Exorcist. Many special effects and makeup are used in religious/demonic films to depicted paleness and a demon appearance. My favorite movie out of the examples is The Omen because it shows how an innocent boy can be the devil's son.

Each type of horror movie has a purpose or a message that it wishes the audience to realize. They play tricks on our minds and convince us to believe ideals within the movie that shouldn't be believed. Believing in them makes us afraid and question if it's possible, yet they also keep us aware of our surroundings and make us ready for the indifferent. Knowing the different types of horror movies and how to identify them will help overcome our fears.
