Please help

Hi teachers. Is this sentence/paragraph grammatically correct and is it smooth or is it way too long and would you break it up into two sentences maybe?

A group of police officers moves, approaches the building, when suddenly a blast roars from the the fifth floor followed by an explosion as/when the terrorists' missiles hits the police officers, blowing them up.

You could break this up for drama, but nothing wrong grammatically as is, once you clean it up a little. For example: A group of police officers approaches the building, when suddenly a blast roars from the fifth floor , followed by an explosion as the terrorists' missiles hit the police officers.
