I have been walking around newyork. That's why I know that there are a lot of homeless people there. I saw them while I was there in New York. Correct?

Your tenses are somewhat contradictory. 'have been walking' sets a scene in which you are now in New York. 'while I was there' suggests you are not now in New York.
