Please help!

Which is the answer to fill in the blank and why so?

If the environment remains constant, the animal’s basic needs, for survival and for reproduction, will be provided for in a more or less automatic fashion. But if the environment changes, the animal whose behavior is governed by pre-programmed patterns is at a ( ), for it cannot easily adapt to changing circumstances.

The animal is at a disadvantage . ) The phrase "at a danger" is not idiomatic, as far as I know. I don't hear US native speakers using it.

The animal is at a disadvantage. (He could be in danger too!)

The phrase "at a danger" is not idiomatic, as far as I know. I don't hear US native speakers using it.
