IF there is a time order signal in the beginning of the sentence + a compound sentence should we put comma before the conjunction ?

for example : At first , he tied her with a longer rope, but Blanchette was still sad

or

The sort of sentence is not relevant. You need not use a comma for short fronted adverbials:

At first he tied her with a longer rope, but Blanchette was still sad.

You should not put a space before a comma, colon or question mark. You also forgot the full stops at the end of your sentences.

I would not bother with the comma after "At first". I would write it as:

At first he tied her with a longer rope, but Blanchette was still sad.
