Do I need a comma before "when" in the following sentence?
Despite having loving grandparents, I always wished to have a perfect family and a strong relationship with my parents when I began to realize that this wish would be unattainable.

'when I began' defies logic. NOr does the contrastive subordination. I had loving grandparents , and I had always wished to have a perfect family and a strong relationship with my parents , but I began to realize that this wish would be unattainable.
