Please help

Which one of these is correct and why?

1. UMD's students have bright future ahead of them.

2. UMD students have bright future ahead of them.


I'm not quiet sure if (UMD) should have an apostrophe. Could someone please help? Please explain with a few more examples. Thanks a lot.

In my opinion, both are acceptable. Same as ' company's name ' or ' company name ' An apostrophe shows a sense of belonging only.
