Q: The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

A:

The line graph illustrates the quantities of the UK’s merchandise delivered in million tonnes over a period of 29 years from 1974 via four distinct means of transport.

Overall, there was an upward trend in the number of products transported by all the modes, except for pipelines. Also, the most preferred way of shipping was by roads, whereas the least favored was by pipes.

In the year 1974, 70 million tonnes of goods were transitted on land, about 14 times as many as those sent through pipes. Over the years, routes’ statistics rose with slight fluctuations and eventually reached a peak of nearly 100 million tonnes. In contrast, that of pipeline was only 20 millions at the end of the period.

Waterway and railway services both shipped 40 million tonnes of freight at the starting point. Overtime, railway shipment underwent a significant rise by 20 million tonnes, whilst rails marginally went down and then up to its initial figure in the last year.
