How does Nehru refer to his country’s past, present and future? How does he characterize these periods?

As to his country’s past, Nehru suggests that it was a time of suppression and hard work, even of pain (l. 14). The “soul of [the indian] nation” was “long suppressed”(l. 4) and did not find utterance until that certain moment he speaks of, meaning today or rather the day the speech was delivered. Furthermore he states that in spite of some failures India had to suffer from, “trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success” (l. 8). Due to India’s absolute determination to achieve those important ideals such as freedom and independence (l. 13), India has, according to him, always been aware of that particular quest and “never lost sight” (l. 8).

Nehru is convinced even the present is still affected by India’s dark past, since “some of those pains continue even now” (l. 15). But overall it seems as if he is pretty satisfied with the present and their achievements, although they are only a step, “an opening opportunity” (l. 10). In his opinion the present is probably the most important time as there are new crucial challenges to be taken on: India now has to prove that it is “brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity” (l. 10) and that the indian nation is capable and willing to perform “the service of the millions who suffer” (l. 18) from “poverty, ignorance, disease and inequality of opportunities” (ll. 18,19).

The future shall be a “noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell” (ll. 28, 29) and that is why Nehru feels the need to encourage the people to take part and play their role in the “great adventure” (l. 27) and in the service I mentioned earlier. “[The indian nation] has to labour and to work and to work hard to give reality to [their] dreams” (l. 22) is the key sentence for the future Nehru dreams of, but in a way as well for the present.
