00Hi, 02h3

00I should write a motivation letter for a undergraduate fellowship program. The deadline for sending the letter is on 15th of Feb. but I have to send this letter by mail to other continents, I think this will take some time!02br
00Now I wrote this letter and I am not sure if everything is clear, if this letter is okay and if the grammer is correct. Maybe I used sometimes strange words so if there are some better words please let me know.02br
02br
00Thanks a lot 02br

00Application for the ***** Program00 01h3

00Dear Dr.01b00 00***** 02b00 02br
00with the present letter I would like to motivate my interest in the Student Fellowship Program at the **********************.02br
02br
00I am currently a third-year undergraduate in Mechatronics with specialization in System- and Device Engineering at the University of Applied Science Ulm and I am very interested in applying for a position between July 10th and October 15th, 2007. 02br
02br
00My research interests, to date, are focused on astronomical instrumentations, and in particular, on high resolution spectroscopy as well as CCD detectors for infrared and optical wavelengths. Spectroscopy is a fascinating topic and provides a series of applications in different astrophysical research fields. For these reasons the projects at the ***** correspond exactly to the kind of research which I wish to pursue. 02br
02br
00As it is explained in more details in my CV, I had previous experiences in this field.02br
02br
00During my undergraduate education at the University of Applied Science of Ulm, in fact, I achieved a strong educational background of engineering concepts. I have received very good theoretical and practical knowledges including fundamental of physics, sensorics, mechanics, electronics, optics and high precise measurements. Besides, I acquired experience with computer aided design software (CAD), in particular Catia V5 and Pro Engineer Wildfire 2. 02br
02br
00Moreover I had two internships in the field of infrared instrumentations. These positions allowed me to work on very interesting projects.02br
02br
00Between February and August 2006 I had an internship at the ********* for ******* in *******. My activity was devoted to design and to develop a two dimensional high resolution position sensor for the NIRSpec grating wheel. NIRSpec is a near infrared spectrometer and one of the four main instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The basic functionality of this sensor is to unambiguously indicate which optical diffraction grating is present in the NIRSpecs optical beam. I have written a paper about the work developed during my internship that will be soon submitted to the Cryogenics Journal.02br
02br
00At the ****** I also attended a course in CCD photometry, where I learned the basic methods to observe with the 0,7 m BROSE telescope and to reduce and analyse astronomical data. I acquired the basic knowledge of IRAF, a package for data reduction and analysis, to determine the age of the open cluster NGC 7654. 02br
02br
00Then from October 2006 I had a second internship at the ******, in ******, where I am still working within the group for the development of infrared instrumentation, and under the supervision of Dr. Best and Dr. Oetker.02br
02br
00I worked at the infrared spectrometer GIANO. This instrument is a infrared high/low resolution cross-dispersed echelle spectrometer which will be installed at the TNG telescope (La Palma, Spain). My tasks were to calculate, design and develop mechanical assemblies of the spectrometer, working in the infrared lab and doing breadboard tests for adjustment and alignment some parts of the optical system in cryogenic environment. Thanks to this project I acquired a strong expertise in the fields of infrared instrumentation, cryo-mechanics and optics.02br
02br
00In May 2007 I will have an observational experience at the ESO La Silla Observatory for 10 days, with Dr. Schleck, a researcher in the field of extrasolar planets at the *********** in *******. This will give me the opportunity to learn the principles of data reduction and analysis for spectra aquired with the ****** 00instrument on the ****** telescope.02br
02br
00Because of my background in this field, I am certain that this program would give me a unique opportunity to gain a deeper theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills in the field of optical and infrared instrumentations. I would be very glad to take part in this demanding program to prove my high level of scientific preparation and motivation. 02br
02br
00Thank you in advance for your attention. 02br
02br
00I am looking forward to your response.02br
02br
00With my best regards,0-
