Many universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Online distance learning courses is regarded as an alternative for students to replace conventional classroom. In my view, while this progress could be detrimental in a number of ways, I do believe it is a groundbreaking move in tertiary education systems.
On the one hand, distance learning through an online platform is attractive for several reasons. The first one is that learners will be able to build up their skills interacting with technology, which there can hardly be done through conventional learning approaches. In addition, studying in their own home will enable them stop being late to school or being disturbed in class due to a vast majority of students.
On the other hand, this method of internet-based learning, without the need for regular face-to-face contact in a classroom, brings significant disadvantages. First, students who study online are lack of teachers’ guidance and peer support. This means that critical soft skills including teamwork and communication skills cannot be facilitated in an educational enviroment. Moreover, participants of online learning programs have a tendency of procrastinate more and poorly allocate an appropriate amount of time on completion of assignments. This form of studying requires tremendous self-discipline as well as excellent organization and time managagement skills as students typically fail to combine course work with other interests, leaving them easily discouraged.
In conclusion, though there are some drawbacks to studying via online courses, I do agree that it is an revolutionary step forward.
