Will Hong Kong still be a tale?

Time Magazine recently has created a new word in an article titled 'A tale of three cities' -- Nylonkong. This word is formed from the names of three of the world's most important cities regarding their financial status. Yet it is too early for Hong Kong to be pound of as Hong Kong is ranked only eighteenth on the list of world-class cities in a recent report which London and New York comes first and second followed by Paris. To some people's surprise, even Beijing and Shanghai are ranked higher than Hong Kong which are eighth and fifteenth respectively. Why do Hong Kong deserve and only deserve this ranking?

There are many elements needed for a city to be world-class and one of these elements is its global significance. This can be reflected in many ways which financial status is one of the aspects which Hong Kong has -- Hong Kong, together with New York and London, has formed an excellent financial network for the world and this of course qualifies the global significance of Hong Kong. Global significance is, however, not judged only in one way but also depends on how important a city is in terms of the world history, art and other aspects . For Hong Kong, she is doing very well just in the financial sector and it would never be enough.

Another requirement a city should meet in order to be worth calling world-class is having the potential to maintain its global significance or even be more important to the world. Beijing and Shanghai are doing this very well as they are developing in a rate that far beyond everyone's imagination. Shanghai are supposed to knock Hong Kong down in terms of financial status within twenty years. Beijing are supposed to knock Hong Kong down in terms of infrastructure within ten years while for the tourism industry, we are sorry, both cities have already knocked Hong Kong down. Beijing and Shanghai are likely to be developing various industries in a even faster rate, but Hong Kong, we see nothing but doubts.

Then, can Hong Kong follow the same path as Beijing and Shanghai or do something -- anything that can help her maintain its status or even to be ranked higher than eighteenth?

Hong Kong can never follow the exact path as Beijing or Shanghai as unlike these two cities with so much room and space, she is too crowded. However, it does not mean that Hong Kong can only do nothing but wait. Every city has their own road to greater success. For example, if Hong Kong is no more focusing only on the financial sector but also give a generous hand to 'raise' other industries 'up', tomorrow might be completely different. Some may say Hong Kong is doing a lot in IT Industry and Tourism Industry, then do more and think more creatively. The Disneyland in Hong Kong helps the tourism so little as Disneyland is everywhere and leaves behind the fact that it is the world's smallest one. However, the Ocean Park might be a different story -- it gives Hong Kong a special character due to its uniqueness. Instead of going with the flow blindly, thinking in a more creative way is more important and useful.

With no doubt, every Hong Kong citizens are hoping 'Nylonkong' will be a word used to describe the world's top world-class cities in all aspects one day but the future is all in doubt. Hong Kong may succeed if she tries. Hong Kong may fail if she tries. There is no certainty but only opportunity. If there is really something that can be quite certain about, that must be this -- Hong Kong will never be a top world-class city if she still does so little from now on.
