Question

Topic: The table shows forested land in millions of hectares in different parts of the world. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.Essay: The diagram provides a comparison of the usage of forested land between six continents during the period from 1990 to 2005. From an overall perspective, it is clear that Europe spent more lands on forests resources than other parts of the world. In addition, the millions of hectares of forested land in Europe and Asia showed an upward trend, whereas the figures for the remaining parts decreased over the period supplied. At the beginning of the period shown, the amount of land that Europeans used for forest growth was highest, at precisely 989 million hectares. The data in South America was slightly lower, at 946 million ha, followed by Africa, North America and Asia, at 749 million ha, 708 million ha, and 577 million ha, respectively. However, the acreage of  forests in Oceania was accounted for the lowest number, at only 199 million ha. In the period from 1990 to 2005, Europe witnessed a gradual increase in the amount of land spent on forests, reaching a peak of 1001 million ha. The area of forested land in Asia suddenly fell to 570 million in 2000 but then rose to 584 at the end of the period. In 2005, the figures for forested areas in South America, North America and Africca were higher than 600 million, at 882 million ha, 705 million ha and 691 million ha, respectively. Oceania was the part of the world that had the smallest area of forest, at 197 million ha over 15 years.

You wrote over 240 words, while the minimum is 150.

You will not lose points for writing more; however, longer essays generally do not get high scores. There are many reasons.

First, the longer the essay, the more chances you have to make errors, and you will lose points for these errors.

Second, especially in Task 2, your writing may be repetitious and wordy. In Task 1, you are likely writing about everything, rather than following the instructions and picking out only the significant points. This will cost you points.

Third, you will take a lot of the limited time writing, and not have time left over to proofread your essay. You will miss the silly mistakes, and that lowers your score.

Fourth, you will not have enough time to devote to Task 2, and get a lower score there. Task 2 counts twice as much for your overall score.

You need to learn that the words and expressions for line graphs are inapplicable for bar charts and tables with only a few data points at widely-spaced intervals. You have to use different words and expressions for scattered data points.

You must learn the correct names for the possible infographics you can get in Task 1.

Sample essay

The table lists the land area, in millions of hectares, covered by forests on the seven continents of the world, except for Antarctica. Oceania represents both Australia and the nearby Pacific islands. Data is given for three different years, 1990, 2000 and 2005.

Overall, the two most heavily forested continents were Europe and South America. Africa and South America had large decreases in their forests between 1990 and 2005, whereas the others showed only small changes.

In detail, the forested areas in Europe and South America approached a billion hectares each in 1990, 989 and 946 million, respectively. Together, they amounted to nearly half of the earth's forests, about 4.1 billion ha. In the next tier, with between 700 and 800 million ha, were Africa (749) and North America (708). Oceania did not have much forest, less than 200 million ha. By 2006, the world had lost nearly 100 million ha, mostly in South America (64 million) and Africa (59 million). But those losses were offset slightly by Europe, which had the largest gain (12 million ha).
