Shylock’s Guide to Struggles and Success
Hello my name is Shylock Bakst, I am a Jewish money lender in the beautiful city of Venice. I was born in Poland in 1566 and was brought up by my mother Rimona age 74 and father Abel aged 80. Being Jewish I am not treated kindly, so I do take up on any opportunity to make a Christian uneasy. Antonio and Bassanio came to me asking for a loan of money, for Bassanio wanted to lend from Antonio, but all his ships were at sea. So when they came to me, I thought to myself, I have the power here, they are relying on me to give them money, I make Bassanio uncomfortable by acting unsure about the loan, Bassanio asks me to dinner and I just say that I find Christians mannerisms offensive. In the end I agree to the loan but if I fail to get my money back I get to have a pound of Antonios flesh as a forfeit.
I decide to go to Bassanios for dinner, and plan to exploit his generosity, I do hesitate on wether to go, and I warn Jessica that I could be back immediately. I come home to find that she has gone! My fury is high like a kite in the sky, to make matters worse Salerio and Salerionio keep teasing me about it, I tell them that I most certainly will get revenge for all of the times I’ve been treated badly by Christains.
I contact my friend Tubal, he told me he had not seen Jessica or her lover “Lorenzo”, but he does tell me that one of Antonios ships had sank. I’m delighted, I can hardly believe it. I laugh with joy for this means that I shall get my pound of flesh from Antonio, I have a frightful desire for revenge, and I shall not give up till I get it! It is his fault that my daughter ran way and if he is unable to pay me back that large sum of money it’s the least he deserves.
I then travel to Belmont in search of Antonio and Bassanio, I find Bassanio and tell him that Antonio cannot repay his loan and that he must pay his forefeit of a pound of flesh. He doesn’t look happy.
Oh yes, the guards take Antonio to prison, and the venetian law Is on my side, what more of a reason is there to gloat, things might work out for me after all.
The day has come to take Antonio down, as I head into court to find out wether I am legally entitled to his pound of flesh. I see Antonio sitting there with a worried look on his face, I decide to torment him a little, by considering where to cut from, and by stroking the knife across his chest. Just as I am about to go ahead and cut, a silly sobbing man shouts at me to “tarry a little“, stop with your interruptions and let me get on with it, I say. This man says that, the bond was only to cut pound of flesh, and says that there was no blood involved in the deal, apparently the Venetian law prevents the shedding of blood. My confidence starts to diminish. He says if I fail to cut an exact pound of flesh without shedding blood, that I can be executed. I ask for the money instead, but I end up just trying to leave. I know I have been defeated at this point, and I know for a fact that I shall get them Christians back one day , and I shall not die until I do.
