How did British Colonization complicate the idea of home?
Oppression is at the root of many serious conflicts, over the history of the world and the many historical periods that go through, religious differences, disagreements about political views, can be seen clearly. conflict between liberalism and oppressive things. The oppressed live in fear, they dare not stand up to protect themselves and their families, everything will change when the mindset of each person is different. This view can be clearly seen in essays by Orwell and Levy. We clearly see how brutal British are through the oppression of Burma and Jamaicans. A home is a place of love, a heart, a community working together to build peace, not a place for conflicts and oppression to exist.
In 1819, the British finished occupying Singapore. In 1820, the British annexed Neepan. Burma became the object of British invasions. Tensions between the Burmese feudal dynasties with Great Britain increased, after a dispute between the two sides at Xapuri Island between the Naaf River - the natural border between Rakhine (Burma) and Bengal (British colony). On March 5, 1824, the Burmese army armed with rudimentary rifles and cannons made in the seventeenth century could not resist machine guns, modern cannons and British warships. In succession, in early 1825 British troops up the Ayeyarwady River flooded Rakhine, then headed for Yandabo (only 80 miles from Inwa). Burma lost the battle, forced to accept the harsh British conditions. On June 24, 1826, the Yandabo treaty was signed by the two sides with the following terms: Burma ceded to Britain the territories of Rakhine, Tanintharyi and Atxam. Burma pays Britain 1 million Sterling compensation for war, four payments over two years. The two sides sign a treaty on trade and exchange of representatives. The amount of compensation is too large, exceeding the ability of Burma to pay off its treasury. In 1827, the Burmese delegation had to go to Calcutta In to postpone the handover of the third and fourth phase. The rapid failure of the war with Britain was a big surprise to the entire Burmese, sparking a Burmese movement, and a resistance movement against the invasion in the populated areas. With much experience in colonial rule, in 1830 the British colonialists sent General Henry Burney to Burma to implement the British division and rule policy.
Jamaica is an ideal valley for the cultivation and exploitation of sugar, as the valleys are riverside, marine, soft and fertile soils. Jamaica was inhabited by Native Americans at that time, also known as Tainos. In 1655, the island was taken over by British, it became an important economic center of British. Here, British have exploited sugar. Here they stripped the peasants of their labor, and regarded them as slaves. In 1775, the island was occupied by the United States. Here became the major trading system of Americans at that time. As in British colonialism, Jamaicans were a slave society. They were imported from West Africa through the slave trade. The slaves were victims of the brutal oppression, the inhuman labor exploitation of the Anglo-American empire at that time. They were trafficked and tortured so that British empire could buy the profits from their labor.
Orwell and Levy are the people who represent the opposers, represent the image of duty-bearers, they have opposing reactions to colonialism and they have analyzed the effects of that opposition according to historical period. Levy noted that colonialism was launched:”the color of your skin was one of the most important things about you.”Levy shows that she clearly saw the racism of the time and that was one thing for colonialism to appreciate the importance of an individual, by looking at the color of an individual's skin. The racism could even stem from hair color and skin tone and it was so heavy that Levy himself felt and understood the importance of skin color, which they saw forever without soul deep inside, which will be skin color and outer things.
Meanwhile, Orwell looks straight at the colonial power: “when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom he destroys.” This shows that he struggled with his own mentality a lot about shooting and killing the elephant. The character had to go against his morals in order to shoot the elephant, even though he didn't want to, he felt himself losing his freedom and thought. From character psychology, one can see how brutal imperialism was. It is they who pay the price for the loss of freedom they have created. This foundation goes deep into the brutality of the history of imperialism, which can destroy any enemy to be at the top, no matter how demoralizing that action. and His relationship like that of Levy, his view of a racist look, class distinguished by skin color has been and remains a subject every generation has to suffer. His conception lies outside of conflict. He's inexperienced in terms of insight, while Levy does that. He has failed to come up with a resolution in this conflict. Even so, both Levy and Orwell's views represent, for the most part, racism, which is occurring every day, every hour, and everywhere in the world. In the racist wars of today's world, there are different classes, both natives and colonists. Most recently, The United States has seen nationwide protests for weeks over the death of George Floyd in police custody, and the frustration that racism and racial inequality still persist throughout modern American life. This is like Orwell and Levy, they are unable to see themselves, they have experienced what is perceived as discontent by skin color, and through racism.
From our point of view we can clearly see the brutality, which was very inhuman during the war. The comparison between colonialism and imperialism through two essays by Levy and Orwell, everything expresses the brutality, personal fear of the oppressed. Everything goes by with time, but today, what we still, somewhere in the world, still exists in injustice, religious conflict. Everyone must build a peaceful world where injustice and fear are free. Fear only upsets the spirit and life of each individual.
