Please explain this sentence

In geology, a valley or dale is a depression with predominant extent in one direction.

Can someone please explain to me what the underlined part of this definition means?

OK, so it's the extent (the degree to which something extends) in one direction that suggests that it is longer than wide?

Why do they say it in this way? Wouldn't there be a clearer way? Extent in one direction just seems unclear. Maybe that's just me though.

You'll have to ask them. The reason could range anywhere from an attempt to say something in a more elegant way than usual to a perverse desire to be mean.

Every specialized field has its own technical terms, its own jargon.

This may well be the way geologists regularly talk to other geologists.
