Essay & Composition Writing

Please, explain the meaning of the sentence clearly..

Hello!

The reason I write this is that I want to know the meaning of the sentences clearly.
Yesterday, my sister asked me these questions, but I had difficulty answering them.
Thus, if you should have time, could you answer the questions below?

-----------------

The vikings here a seafaring group originally inhabiting a part of northern Europe that comprises much of the land that currently makes up Denmark,
Norwas, and Sweden. They were renowned for their elegant, resillient boats. Almost always adorned with intricate carvings and dragon heads, the boats were
visually appealing and well designed. They also featured a long, wide hull using a series of overlapping planks that guaranteed stability.
The design of the boats would be imitated by other cultures for centuries to come.

-----------------

I have a few questions concerning with this writing above.

1. What is the meaning of the last sentence, "The design of the boats would be imitated by other cultures for centuries to come."
I think "would" in the sentence means "used to."
In other words, I think that the sentence is the same as this, "The design of the boats was sometimes imitated by others ......"
Is that right?
The reason I ask this is "would" can often be used instead of "will" with less possibility, so I want to make sure it does not mean "will" in this sentence.

2. I quite got confused by the phrase, "for centuries to come." Can it be used to refer to the past?
Because of "to come", I feel that it means the future, not the past.

But in this case, it seems that it means from the the moment the boats were made till now..)
That is, it seems to mean the past in the context, Can you shed light on this, please?

3. "The viking boat design was copied well into the future."
This sentence is a paraphrase of the last sentence above.
Similar to the 2nd question, I think "the furue" here means "from that moment to unlimited future."
Is that right or, does it mean "from that moment to now?"

Thank you Emotion: smile

Top answer

1. "-- This is called 'future-in-the-past' would . It refers to a time that is future to the boats' original design, but before Now.
