I'm not sure how I'd answer this one. I'd say:
Along the river, by following the back of the houses.

Suggestion:
In order to get out of town along the river, what did the shopkeeper think Alex should do?
Follow the back of the houses.

I believe it's correct.

The reason I felt unsure about the answer, is beacause the way I understood it, following the back of the houses was the method/way which Alex was to use in order to get out of town along the river. It wasn't really a separate thing, but rather a hint as to how he, Alex, would get out of town along the river. In that sense, I felt the original answer was inconsistent in feel with the passage, as it, the answer, mentioned the two points as if they were two separate things or steps, when they really weren't.

The idea was to get out of town along the river; following the back of the houses was merely a recommendation in that regard.
