The bar chart displays Japan's population in the past, present and future and the table show the statistics of its population aged 65 years and over and their percentage of the overall population in four different years.
Overall, Japan's population has steadily increased from 1950 to 2015 and is predicted to see a steep decline in the future and the population over 65 years and above has significantly increased and continues to see the same trend in the future.
The population of Japan in 1950 was 84.1 million, and it rose to 125.4 million in 2015. After 2015, the population started to decline and is expected to drop sharply to 89.9 million in 2055.
In 1905, Japan's population aged 65 years and above was only 4.1 million, making 4.9% of the total population. The figures rocketed to 25.7 million, contributing to 20% of the overall population in 2005. These numbers are estimated to increase to 37.2 million in 2035 and gradually decrease to 36.5 million in 2055, contributing to 34% and 41& of the total population, respectively.
