Please Evaluate my Writing Task 2

Television is dangerous because it destroys family life and any sense of community; instead of visiting people or talking with our family, we just watch television.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

The given prompt presents an opinion which states that Television is detrimental to human society and social life as it affects our family life and sense of community. This is because people chooses entertainment on TV over actually socializing with their family members. In my opinion, this statement reflects certain reality of our society today, and I would say it is actually true to a certain extent, partially agreeing to it, for the following reason.

It is no lie that nowadays people find amusement in television shows and entertainment program and chooses to sit in front of the screen for hours. This certainly has negatively impacted the way we used to socialize, as before the popularity of TV, family members used to actively participate in family communication, like talking over the dinner table. That is a scarce scene today, as family now chooses to silently watch the TV as they do various activities(which originally involved talking and socializing). People get so engrossed, that, one can say that we temporarily lose ourselves in the world of that TV, forgetting the people around us. Most importantly we forget how important these moments in our lives are for us to bond with others; as we silently kill it, choosing a form of escapism; TV.

However, the part ‘destroys family and any sense of community ’ feels like an exaggeration. Yes, TV does make us busy, depriving the very fundamental and social aspects of the human community, like talking with each other, but it certainly does not ‘destroys’ family. TV has been popular for ages and human civilization have survived, and families too. Truth is, people have learnt and adapted themselves. We can still see family member discussing things after the show. Some people love to discuss about TV shows after they complete watching it. Neighbours come together to gossip about the daily soaps and men talk about upcoming sports matches on TV.

While it’s true that communication has been hampered, TV has given new ways to socialize and bond with our society and with our family as only the elements of socializing have changed.
