The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph compares the amount of goods transported in the UK by four different modes of transport between 1974 and 2002. These are road, water, rail and pipeline. Units are measured in million tonnes.

Overall, road was the most popular mode of transport, while pineline was used the least. The amount of goods tranported by rail was stable from 1971 to 2002, whereas those of the three remaining ways of tranportation increased.

In detail, the value for road increased from 70 million to nearly 80 million in 1994, after which it continually rised to reach its highest level, at about 90 million. There was a slight change for water in the initial four years before an increase to 60 million in 1994, at which point this figure started to fall to around 50 million but suddenly went up to more than 20 million. Rail started out at precisely 40 million but ended up with no change. The two lowest levels were closely 30 million, at 1986 and 1994. In 1974, the amount of goods tranported by pinepine was only about 5 million but rapidly went up to nearly 25 million eight years later and remained stable from that to 1990, this was followed by a fall to 20 million in 1994. In the last eight years, the value for pipeline plateaued.

I chose to combine the total weight at start and end of the period. Then the relative amounts (percentages or proportions) for each mode of transport could be compared. I also used the abbreviation MT for millions of tonnes, which removed a lot or repetition.
