The diagrams below show the life cycle of a species of large fish called the salmon. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagrams provide descriptions about how salmon develops in its life cycle. Generally speaking, there are three key stages to complete a full cycle of this large fish species.

To begin with, salmon eggs are laid among reeds and small stones in the upper river where water moves fairly slow. After about 5 to 6 months, these eggs hatch into fry, which is only 3 to 8 cm in length.

These fries then swim downstream to the lower river in which the flow is much faster and stay there for approximately 4 years. Next, after the first stage of maturation, fries turn into smolts whose length is from 12 to 15 cm.

These smolts then move toward the open sea and spend 5 years for full maturation to grow into “adult salmon”. The size of adult salmons, which is 70 to 76 cm long, is 6 times as high as that of smolts. Finally, adult salmons migrate to the upper river where they lay eggs. This is where one cycle completes and another one starts.
