Overall, the use of car as a mode of transport has raised consistently while the usage of bike has declined over the period of time. Moreover, the use of public transport displays fluctuation whereas walking shows a massive decrement.
Firstly, the usage of car for regular transport displays a staggering growth; starting-off at about 5% in 1996 and reaching 35% by the end of 2000. This signifies innovation and technological development in the motor vehicle industry. On the other hand, the use of bike shows a consistent decline from 25% in 1960 to about 7% in 2000.
Secondly, the popularity of public transportation also shows fluctuation. However, this category has maintained a relatively consistent pattern of usage among the daily commuters. Finally, the most interesting trends can be seen in foot commuting which started-off all-time high at about 34% in 1960 which then plummeted to around 9% by the end of 2000, thus elucidating an overwhelming increase in the popularity of motor vehicles.
