QUESTION:

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on every day matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

ANSWER:

Are parents raising self-centered adults by allowing them to make harmless everyday decisions? While some people might agree to this query stating that it will result in a society full of adults who only think about themselves, others might differ and would rather support encouraging them. In this essay, I will discuss both of these points of view and conclude with my personal opinion.

All parents want their children to grow into sensible, responsible and beneficial individuals of society. To instill a sense of responsibility in their young ones, they often allow them to make their own choices in matters of clothing, type of food and recreational activities. This is considered as a "positive parenting" approach by many social psychologists. However, if this harmless decision making is allowed unsupervised, then there is a possibility that parents might be raising selfish adults. Moreover, if such attitudes become consolidated over a long period of time, then people of such mindset often fail to even demonstrate the feeling of empathy towards others.

While on the contrary, if parents regulate such trivial decision making of their children, then this can potentially lead to raising adults who are not only responsible but also fruitful for the whole society. These children will grow into confident adults who are not afraid of taking risks as well as compassionate members of society.

To conclude, in my opinion, if parents allow their children to make routine harmless decisions, then there is absolutely nothing to be worried about provided that such practices are exercised under parental supervision. I believe this will inculcate a sense of great awareness in the young people.
