Some people think that the government is wasting money on the arts and this money could be better spent elsewhere. To what extent do you agree with this view.

Through the years, art has been a vital part of human culture. Many support the idea that governments should continuously fund it. However, I strongly believe that due to the pandemic, governments should divert the money initially intended to support art to help the health care system.

It is without a doubt that art has enriched our imagination and culture and that it would continue to help us evolve as well-balanced individuals if governments allocated a large sum of money to the arts. However, I would argue that with the current state of the world, governments should use their resources to make sure that we win the battle against the Covid19 virus. It is an unfortunate fact that a lot of countries need financial help against the virus. In India, for instance, the money for the arts could be better spent on purchasing oxygen tanks to use as a lifeline of many patients inflicted with the coronavirus. At this moment, it is criminal to use the government’s money for art, knowing that a lot of people could be saved with this money.

Another thing to consider is that the arts could take a backseat at the moment to make sure that we would be ready for another worldwide catastrophic event such as the current pandemic that we have. If the health care system is well-funded and therefore, ready for the next pandemic, the world will not suffer as gravely as we have suffered now. Only then can governments allocate a substantial amount of their budgets to the arts. It is of paramount importance that we ensure our survival first as a species before engaging ourselves in the arts.

In conclusion, the arts play a critical role in society. However, I strongly feel that because of the issues that the world is currently facing, the money on the arts could be used instead to fight for our survival.
