Please Evaluate answer to the below question
1. The traffic was terrible! When we finally arrived at the airport, the plane____

Two past events and one precede other, so it has to be past perfect. My confusion is "already left" is past perfect or "Had already left" is past perfect. Please help me understand which is correct answer and why?
